  1. Inflation rate declines for second straight month
    The inflation rate for the month of August 2003 was 1.4%. This is lower than the 1.53% in the prevuous month and well below the 2.46% peak in June. The monthly inflation rate started to rise in april this year, fueled by increases in the foreign exchange rate, the introduction of GCT on a number of new items and higher oil prices leading up to the war on Iraq.

    At least one economic indicator is pointing to increased industrial activity. The total volume of electricity used by the island’s industrial entities rose 5.75% in the first seven month of this year.

    Total banana production stood at 21,303 metric tonnes in the first seven month of 2003. In the same period a year ago the figure stood at 23,916.

    In the seven- month period up to the end of end of July this year, cruise ship passenger arrivals made up 45% of the total tourist arrivals. In the same period last year, the figure was 39%.
